Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely gotten through winter in Justin just yet. Mother Nature has provided us with a few nice days, but she’s always prepared to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a professional out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall can bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures start to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can keep a high-efficiency system from operating as such. The situation could become an even larger problem too if you don’t prep for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are preparations you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work correctly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the upcoming days and weeks.

  1. Ensure you have a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Check the area frequently to ensure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that could have piled up through the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, putting a cover over your air conditioner might end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner may be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Justin will probably go up and down over the last few days of winter, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can alter the performance of your air conditioner. At Pepper AC & Htg Inc in Justin, we are always available to inspect any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or adding a new system.
