Why Your Residence's Indoor Air Quality Matters

March 25, 2020

The worldwide spread of COVID-19 has likely turned your typical routine upside down.

In uncertain times, you can take peace in knowing your residence is your safe area. You’re probably spending more time there today. As a result, your indoor air quality is now more important than ever.

Were you aware we can install indoor air quality products in your residence that deliver hospital-grade filtration? These options can clear bacteria from your air, as well as allergens, odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Today’s houses are securely sealed, which is great for energy efficiency. But it also means your indoor air could be worse than the air outside. In actuality, the EPA says it can be two to five times worse than outdoors. This could be troublesome, since we spend about 90% of our days inside.

There are many factors that can cause poor indoor air quality, like cleaning products and air fresheners. These might cause headaches and exasperate allergies and asthma.

There’s a combination of things you can do to enhance your air quality. Some include enhanced air filters, an air purification system or an ultraviolet (UV) germicidal light.

Not certain which system is best for your house? Our skilled technicians can complete an indoor air quality audit. Based on the results, we can then advise you on the ideal choice for your home’s distinct needs.

Air Filtration

When browsing air filters, it’s important to review the MERV rating, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This assesses how effectively it filters contaminants.

One of the most average and least expensive filters, flat fiberglass filters, are graded between 1 and 4 on the MERV register. Pleated filters are slightly better, rated between 8 and 12.

We suggest installing at minimum a MERV 13, for example, the HC13 Media Air Cleaner, for the best outcome. This filter gives cleaner air while reducing energy consumption*.

High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are regarded as the benchmark in air filtration, as they’re frequently installed in hospitals. They’re effective at catching 99.97–99.99% of indoor pollutants, like pollen, pet dander and smoke.

Air Purification

Lennox® provides some of the best air purification units you can get. PureAir™ S and Healthy Climate™ PureAir Air Purification Systems provide hospital-grade filtration while taking care of all kinds of indoor air contaminants.

This powerful equipment can eliminate:

  • 99.9% of allergens, such as pollen, dust and pet dander
  • 95% of bacteria-sized particles, such as ones that contribute to strep throat
  • 50% of VOCs and odors within 24 hours

UV Germicidal Lights

A UV germicidal light is placed inside your HVAC unit. Its powerful rays eradicate bacteria and mold within seconds.

If your family suffers from allergies or asthma, this system could offer relief. Especially if you reside in a humid part of the country where bacteria and mold flourish.

This light also offers an added perk for your HVAC system. It could help it work for a greater period of time and heat and cool more efficiently, since it keeps the internal pieces clean.

Our air quality engineers recommend installing one of these lights with an improved filter, such as our Carbon Clean 16® Media Air Cleaner, for the greatest results. This filter offers industry-leading MERV 16 filtration in addition to carbon-coated fibers to remove particles from your home’s air. It does all of this without limiting your comfort unit’s airflow.

Whole-Home Humidifiers

Having correct humidity in your home can help keep your family in good health when it’s chilly. It can assist with sore throats, itchy skin and cracked lips, among other cold weather bothers.

If you don’t know what your house’s humidity range is, we’ll determine it during your indoor air quality audit. While the range fluctuates based off of outdoor temperatures, HVAC experts generally advise keeping it between 40–60 percent.

You can accomplish this optimum range with a whole-home humidifier. This equipment typically functions with your furnace or air handler to give optimal humidity across your home. Some equipment, like the Healthy Climate® Whole-Home Power Humidifier, contain an included fan to spread humidity when your heating unit isn’t on.
